It is unclear when the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) first admitted minority students. However, it appears as though the first African American students entered the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (renamed RIT in 1944) during the early 1900s. For instance, in 1906 Fredericka Sprague, the granddaughter of Frederick Douglass, took classes at the Institute. David Dickinson was born January 3, 1940 in Middlesex, England. He attended the Chelsea School of Art in London, Statens Handverks-og-Kunstindustriskole in Oslo, and RIT in Rochester. Before coming to RIT, Dickinson taught printmaking at Maidstone College of Art in England. After earning his MFA in printmaking from RIT in 1972, he was hired as an Assistant Professor in the College of Fine and Applied Arts.
